Elmar Jürgens

Founder

Biography.

Elmar works both as a researcher and a founder. Elmar wrote his award-winning PhD thesis on static code analysis and is still active as a researcher in software quality analysis. In 2009, he co-founded CQSE GmbH. He (and his 60 colleagues) since help international teams in using software intelligence analyses to write better software in less time. Elmar frequently gives keynotes and talks at research conferences (e.g. ICSE, ICPC, SANER) and industry events (e.g. German Testing Day, Software Quality Days, Agile Testing Days, AutomationSTAR, EuroSTAR). He was elected best speaker 10+ times, including at Clean Code Days, German Testing Day and Software Quality Days. Elmar was named Junior Fellow of the GI in 2015 and received the German Award for Software Quality in 2024. His research was cited 4000+ times. He is the program chair of EuroSTAR 2026 in Oslo.

Spring Cleaning for Test Managers: Lets Throw Out the Redundant Tests!

Large test suites often contain many tests that are absolutely redundant. They overlap with other tests so much that they only find bugs that these other tests already find. Such redundant tests are not only useless, but harmful: They slow down test execution without adding value in terms of bug-finding capability. And even worse, they eat up effort to maintain that would be better spent elsewhere. So let’s remove them!
But how can we detect redundant tests in our large test suites? And how can we be sure that they really provide no value?
In my talk, I will present several approaches to identify redundant tests. I will share their research background, our empirical studies and our experiences with how well they work under which conditions.
